Centralized warehouse boosts efficiency in Pavilion K

Jimmy Holden, Operations Manager of the warehouse, uses the new fork-lift.

To a significant degree, the ability to provide patients with safe, efficient treatment and care means getting the right supplies to the right clinicians as quickly and efficiently as possible. Achieving that goal has been much easier since October 23, when the JGH warehouse moved to Pavilion K.

According to Jimmy Holden, Operations Manager “warehouse staff are really enjoying their new work environment.” The relocation took only a few hours, and when it was done, staff members immediately felt at home in their new space.

For years, the Warehouse Department in Pavilion B had no choice but to place supplies in many different rooms and hallways. As a result, it was not uncommon for warehouse personnel to lose time hunting for items that had to be taken to various places in the hospital, especially since some storage rooms were filled to the brim.

In addition, deliveries from suppliers used to arrive at a temporary outdoor receiving dock, where the shipments were picked up by staff and distributed among a number of stock rooms.

Today, almost all supplies are stored in a single 10,000-square-foot warehouse—the exception being small items, which are still stored on a revolving carousel. The facility also features windows that let daylight in, as well as high ceilings and high racking systems that require departmental staff to use a forklift, a new piece of equipment on which they were trained before the move.

The warehouse has four receiving doors—one of which is accessible by a ramp—enabling suppliers to unload merchandise right inside the warehouse. This means staff no longer have to contend with nasty weather while processing and separating the freight more quickly. A wider outside laneway also makes maneuvering much easier for delivery trucks.

“By having everything so well organized in one large space, we’ve become more efficient and our suppliers are very happy, as well,” Mr. Holden says.
