Seeing the JGH with new eyes by walking with the CEO

Annie Danino got a first-hand look at how Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg spent a typical day, in the JGH’s Walk in the CEO’s Shoes competition.

Sometimes knowing and seeing can be two very different things.

Social Worker Annie Danino says she has always been aware of the complexity of running a healthcare institution as large and diverse as the JGH, but watching the hospital’s executives in action gave her a new appreciation for their efforts.

Ms. Danino, who has worked with Cardiology patients for more than 28 years, arrived at this conclusion after spending the better part of the day with Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg, President and CEO of West-Central Montreal Health, in the JGH’s Walk in the CEO’s Shoes competition.

After joining Dr. Rosenberg for meetings with members of senior management, Ms. Danino found she had learned a great deal about the JGH, having had an opportunity “to meet with people who I now see provide a lot of support and knowledge to the CEO to be able to do his job.”

She said the experience lived up to her expectations, since she was “was really interested in finding out about the inner workings of the hospital, especially in the context of all of the changes going on in our healthcare system.”

Dr. Rosenberg said he enjoyed Ms. Danino’s company and hoped she would “take away from today’s experience a better appreciation of just how complicated the organization is.

MR – Even though you are in the serious process of building a healthcare network, what advice would you share with Annie – or any other staff member – about maintaining excitement and enthusiasm through a major challenge such as this one?

“Despite that, the senior team, which she saw in action in various venues, really is a very coherent, committed group of individuals who are all very patient-centred in their orientation. The decisions we take, and the way we discuss how we’re going to take decisions, really puts patients at the centre of the experience.”

Dr. Rosenberg added that this perspective is especially valuable, as West-Central Montreal Health continues to evolve. “We’re going through a major challenge, but every major challenge represents a magnificent opportunity to to re-engage in our organization—and now in our healthcare network—and really double up on our efforts to improve the quality of care that we provide to our patients.”
